Aruban author Mr. Ronald van Donk recently published his book titled: ‘Beschaving, Bekering en Bevoogding.’ Honderd jaar onderwijs op Curaçao, Aruba en Bonaire (1816-1916).
Main topics covered in this book are Civilisation, Conversion and Paternalism. A historical deep research has been done on these topics from the 19th century on the ABC islands.
On Tuesday, September 24, 2019. Mr. Ronald Donk will discuss his latest book at the Arubiana department at the Bachstraat in Oranjestad.
About the author:
Drs. Ronald Donk was born in 1945 in Aruba, attended his first school years in San Nicolas. After a while they migrated to the Netherlands where he continued his education, and later graduated as a school teacher. He has since worked for 40 years in many levels of secondary education.
From 1975 until 1978 he was a teacher at Colegio Arubano, Antilliaanse Lerarenopleiding and Academia Pedagogico Arubano.
During the last 15 years, the author has published many articles related to the history of Curacao like the slave industry, slavery but also about education in the islands of Sotavento.
He has lectured in many countries including England, Rusia, South Africa, Surinam, Curacao, and Aruba. The author has many booklets about slavery, the business and emancipation after the termination of slavery in the Caribbean. Together with other authors, he wrote the book “ Geschiedenis van de Antillen” (2009). He recently published a few articles in “Archiefvriend” and in the “Antilliaans Dagblad”.

The Biblioteca Nacional Aruba is inviting everyone interested in this topic, an essential part of our history, to attend the presentation of drs. Ronald Donk, Tuesday, September 24, 2019, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm in the yard of Arubiana at Bachstraat 5 in Oranjestad (see invitation). The presentation is in Dutch and there will be the opportunity to purchase books for 50 florins.
