Who is most at risk of getting the Corona Virus COVID-19?

ORANJESTAD - COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by a new virus that affects everybody, but the ones most vulnerable to develop lung complications and die are people older than 60 years and people with chronic diseases.

A chronic illness/ disease is a long-term health condition that may not have a cure. Examples of chronic illnesses are:

  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Obesity
  • Lung disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • People with a low immune system because of cancer and HIV/Aids

In most cases, people 60 years and older have one or more chronic disease which makes them the group most affected by his pandemic. This is the reason the government prohibited all visits to nursing homes/long term care facilities.

Department of Public Health (DVG) urges people 60 years and older that are still active to:

  • wash their hand frequently with soap and water
  • avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • refrain from attending social activities

DVG also encourages family members to help their loved ones during this period.
