AAA and Artopia recently signed an agreement to start the creative and artistic design process for a sculpture that will capture this memorable moment. It will reflect aviation’s evolvement throughout its 100 years of history and thus include a historical aspect, a modern-day aspect, and a futuristic aspect. The piece of public art will also reflect the highly dynamic feature of the aviation industry for the entire community and our visitors to enjoy.
The exact location of this sculpture has yet to be determined. It will also form a part of the actual narrative around it that will be designed and produced by Artopia with the input of AAA.
Joost Meijs, CEO of AAA: “Commemorating this historic milestone in Aruban history through beautiful public art narrating Aruba’s aviation history is our gift to Aruba and its community. This public piece of art will add enormous value to the cultural, aesthetic, and economic vitality of our community. As public art, this sculpture will contribute to Aruba’s identity, foster community pride around 100 years of aviation in Aruba and a sense of belonging, and as such enhance the quality of life for Aruba’s residents and visitors.”
Artopia will complete the sculpture in a few months. Its unveiling is on August 18, 2023, the day we officially celebrate 100 years of aviation in Aruba after the first aircraft landed in 1923 in Paardenbaai.
Artopia is an Aruban Foundation for the public arts and has as its goal, amongst other activities, to place art in Aruba, to bring persons together who are engaged in art in any way, shape, or form to promote the art in general and to curate art and cooperate with organizations and institutions in Aruba in this field.
