The Head of Cooperation, Mr. Joan Nadal Sastre, and the Head of Finance and Contracts, Mr. Laurent Bal, are established in Guyana as EU representatives for the Caribbean region. The EU delegation planned to visit Aruba and Curacao.
Minister Geoffrey Wever is the Territorial Authorizing Officer (TAO) for Aruba. As TAO for Aruba, he is in charge of and responsible for managing projects with the European Union and regional projects.
Recently Aruba received EU funds for the Sustainable Island through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics {SISSTEM) and the Resilience, Sustainable Energy and Marine Biodiversity (RESEMBID) program.
Aruba also will receive funds for the e-government project.
As announced previously, his program is financed by the EU, implemented by the United Nations Development Program, and coordinated by the University of Aruba and the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.
It entails financial funds from the European Union for the Small Island Development States (SIDS), the category under which Aruba falls.
The delegation expressed its desire to help Aruba deter brain drain, a phenomenon when graduates or experts leave their home countries and go elsewhere. Consequently, a country loses its human capital and expertise in various areas.
The delegation's wish is in line with that of Minister Wever since investment in innovation and educational systems makes our economy’s diversification more realistic and also helps a more sustainable development of our nation. In other words, brain drain becomes brain gain.
