The first minting of the coin took place at Dakota Airport, the building that served as the first airport, which was also officially designated as a monument during this event.
The commemorative coin for 100 years of Aviation Aruba was minted by the Royal Dutch Mint, commissioned by the Central Bank of Aruba.
Minister of Finance and Culture Ms. Xiomara J. Maduro minted the first silver commemorative coin by hand strike to celebrate 100 years since aviation got off the ground in Aruba.
The first flight
In 1923, the first two airplanes landed in the Paardenbaai harbor of Oranjestad, Aruba. With this, aviation was born in Aruba: starting in 1934, commercial flights also started on the island. Once a week, six passengers could be transported between Aruba and CuraƧao. In 1942, a small building was erected that served as a terminal and since then, Aruba's airport has been expanded and modernized. From the Koningin Beatrix International Airport, flights are currently operated to more than thirty destinations in more than ten countries.
