During the meeting, the Prime Minister gave an update on the financial situation of Aruba. She informed Mr. Rutte about the budget approval, and for 2023, Aruba will have a budget surplus.
Other topics discussed were the opportunities for Aruba and the Netherlands to work together on some projects and how the Netherlands can help Aruba. In addition, they also discussed the 916 million florin debt that Aruba has with the Netherlands due to the pandemic.
Prime Minister Wever-Croes indicated that for October 2023, they have to agree on the following:
- how to pay this debt;
- if Aruba has to pay this debt in full;
- when the debt payment is due.
This theme must discuss with State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Alexandra van Huffelen.
Prime Minister Wever-Croes indicated that the meeting was fruitful. Prime Minister Rutter showed interest in the developments taking place in Aruba regarding the following themes:
- Energy;
- Government expenses;
- Economic development, and possibilities;
- How the Netherlands can help Aruba;
“It was a fruitful meeting which gives me faith and confidence that we will reach our goals”, Prime Minister Wever-Croes stated.
