Subsidy and benefits for foster children

ORANJESTAD - Over the past few days, there was a noticeable concern in the community regarding the school subsidy paid to foster parents.

Recently, the Minister of Justice and Social Affairs, Mr. Rocco Tjon met with the Director of the Department of Social Affairs, to clarify the misunderstanding about this subject.

Based on the seriousness of this matter, the Minister called an urgent meeting to make sure the subsidy payments to foster parents are not stopped since they highly depend on this. The Minister stated that it was a very productive meeting where they solved some of the issues.

With this, the Minister is assuring foster families, who depend on the school allowance subsidy and other school benefits for their foster child and are registered at the Department of Social Affairs, that they will receive the subsidy in the first week of November 2021.

The Minister also stated that this subsidy was never at risk of being stopped and that it is an essential matter that has his attention.

The Ministry of Justice and Social Affairs sent a letter to the board of the Department of Social Affairs in which they agreed to establish a task force to come up with recommendations on a short term regarding the current management of the Department of Social Affairs and the Guardianship Council to reach a policy. The existing laws will also be revised and adapted if deemed necessary.
