Supernova Girls STEM Experience a success

ORANJESTAD – Recently, Aruba Futura Foundation, in collaboration with 'Makerpedia', organized an event called "Girls STEM Experience" as part of the Supernova project.

Girls STEM Experience event of the Supernova proyect.Girls STEM Experience event of the Supernova proyect.The Girls STEM Experience's objective is to stimulate and introduce innovation to young girls between the ages of 6 and 9 years in the sector of Science and Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). They divided the location at FUTURA into four rooms, each representing one of the sectors of STEM. The young girls had the opportunity to attend multiple workshops, challenges, and games held on June 18, 2022. They explored their imagination in these sectors and learned new things and skills educationally and interactively. This event was free of charge and had 125 participants.

A female professional hosted each of the STEM sectors.

In the Science room, Mrs. Elena Duduk, a Science teacher at the International School of Aruba, introduced the children to a microscope. They experimented using a variety of materials, including living and non-living organisms. In addition, they did experiments with organisms that survive in water, like plankton.

Girls STEM Experience event of the Supernova proyect.Girls STEM Experience event of the Supernova proyect.Mrs. Richelle Chirino - a STEM enthusiast - prepared an experience in Mathematics where the children had to use LEGO. They also created objects using the art of origami and explained to the children that the most common things in life have some form of mathematics.

In the Engineering room, Mrs. Tess Montenarello of 'Makerpedia' showed the children how to create an arcade game using recycled materials like cardboard, plastics, boxes made of various materials, etc. 

Finally, in the Technology room, Mrs. Christie Mettes of the Metabolic Foundation showed the children how to use daily objects like fruits and vegetables to play computer games using conductivity. The children also learned the art of digital design and created artifacts while learning more about the opportunities and possibilities of 3D printing.

Supernova contributes to and stimulates gender equality, which is the UN's Sustainable Development Goal number 5, which guarantees that no female is left behind.
