The Government met with septic companies for a new policy

ORANJESTAD - The Minister of Transport, Integrity, Nature, and Senior Affairs, Mr. Ursell Arends, recently invited all stakeholders in the septic tank/truck industry to attend a second meeting about the privatization of the RWZI plant. Utilities Aruba N.V. will now manage the wastewater treatment plant.

The Minister of Infrastructure and the Minister of Nature is taking steps to solve the wastewater issue in Aruba. One of the biggest concerns is that the RWZI plant,  neglected for many years, became a source of pollution.

The Minister of Transport, Integrity, Nature, and Senior Affairs, Mr. Ursell Arends, meets with the stakeholders in the septic tank/truck industry about the privatization of the RWZI plant. To solve this issue, Utilities Aruba N.V. will start by privatizing the RWZI facility and assets to update this and adequately maintain the plant. The privatization will take place near the end of March 2023.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became clear that most of the wastewater that ends in the RWZI in Bubali comes from the hotels. It resulted in a new processing fee for those that generate the most wastewater.

The intention is to base the business case on selling the purified water back to the hotels for irrigation and to the agricultures in Aruba. It should help reduce the amount of wasted wastewater after it is processed and help create funds to sustain the facility.

It should also consider the wetland areas as part of the plans for the processed water to stimulate the water flow to support the flora and fauna and further biodiversity. The plan to connect the five wetlands "Western Wetlands," is part of the privatization plan and vision of the Ministry of Transport, Integrity, Nature, and Senior Affairs.
