ORANJESTAD – The Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs and Culture, Xiomara Maduro, recently noticed a press release announcing the increase of “bread plus” by bakeries due to increased expenses.

The Minister wants to clarify that the Government does not regulate the price of “bread plus.”

BreadIn 2011, when the Government wanted to regulate the price of the regular white loaf, the bakeries decided to convert the white loaf into bread plus. The bakeries added an extra ingredient to the white loaf, thus impeding the regulation of these loaves as a regular white loaf. To regulate the price of bread loaves and wheat bread, the commodity law must be revised first. This law regulates the price of the ingredients of among others, white bread loaves. To make this revision, the Government needs the cooperation of all bakeries.

‘Free market’

BreadThe Department of Economic Affairs (DEZHI) regulates the prices of items included in the basket of goods, for example, bread, eggs, and Covid19 related hygiene products. Our economic system is based on ‘free market’, which means that the free market is free to compete and the business owners have the freedom to stipulate their own prices for their products. The consumer, on the other hand, has the buying power and can decide where to shop and can choose where the prices are the lowest, better, etc.
