ORANJESTAD - The Directorate of Nature and Environment is explaining the reason to celebrate international days.

Most international or global days are celebrated to create awareness and educate the community about topics of concern that needs global attention.

International days are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity on a global and national scale.

Ad World Oceans DayThe DNM is also an organization that promotes the globally celebrated days. It is an effective opportunity to make an international day a springboard for awareness-raising actions.

DNM as a member of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) has chosen the days proposed by the United Nations as global focus days in order to concentrate together with the UNEP on the topics relevant to the celebrated days.

Besides raising awareness on the issues regarding nature and environment, the DNM as UNEP member also follows the advices given by the United Nations, on how to attend with serious issues highlighted with an International day. One example is the resolution of May 22, marked as International Day of Biological Diversity where the UN urges all to ensure the protection of the Biological Diversity as stated in the Cartagena Protocol.

Ad World Environment DayThis year’s theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity is “Biodiversity, Our Food, and Our Health” The focus is on the knowledge and awareness of our dependency on biodiversity.

In some occasions, some themes are so important that they become the theme of the week, the year and even decade. Every single International Day has its own website and include a variety of languages in order to reach a broad audience worldwide. These sites include researched information as well as user ready images available for share on social media platforms.

The sites also contain a list of activities for the celebration of the International Days. Experts from all fields come together to create awareness on the themes. Some artists create awareness campaigns or are part of organized concerts in order to help spread the message for awareness.

Logo Sustainable Development GoalsUnited Nations is the authority that deals with most global issues that need collaboration from all to reach solutions. That is why the UN has proposed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which is the template for the realization of a better and more sustainable future. The 17 SDG’s are: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good health and Well-being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy etc. These are connected so no one is left behind. Each objective should be reached by 2030.

The DNM also promotes and voices the importance of the 17 SDG’s and is working in collaboration with other departments to reach their purpose.

DNM continues with the creation of awareness on the themes of nature and environment as presented by the UN during the days celebrated both locally as globally. For more information, please follow us on Facebook or Instagram on @dnmaruba
