ORANJESTAD – Every November 14, we commemorate World Diabetes Day.

This year's theme is Education to Protect Tomorrow. It focuses on the need to strengthen access to quality education on diabetes for healthcare teams, diabetics, and the community. 

Diabetes is a chronic disease categorized as a non-communicable disease (NCD).

This chronic disease affects kidney function, eyesight, nerves, heart, circulation, and brain. Diabetes can be genetic or develop because of an unhealthy lifestyle.

According to data from the Department of Health, 16.24% of the Aruban population suffers from diabetes. A high percentage compared to the rest of the world.

Some tips from the Department of Public Health to combat diabetes:

  • Be more physically active( minimally 30 minutes per day;
  • Maintain a healthy weight;
  • Stop smoking;
  • Make sure to have time for relaxation;
  • Take good care of your feet and control them daily every day;
  • Avoid alcohol.

Start with positive changes for your health. Educate yourself about diabetes so you can be protected tomorrow.
